EXPERT SLEEP STRATEGIES THAT WILL HELP PUT YOUR BABY TO BED

By April 6, 2020 No Comments

Most parents are concerned about how to get little children to bed and sleep.

Babies are naturally fickle and unpredictable with their sleep schedules; today, they may sleep for the whole day, and the next, they stay awake all night. You get the idea. Babies refusing to sleep could even result in an unfortunate sleeping habit for the entire household.

As a result of this, experts came up with different ideas to help put babies to sleep. What we did was concentrate on the few that are both easy and highly effective. Now, let’s look at these strategies and see how it can help you get your babies to sleep.

Create a routine around bedtime.

Babies, unlike us, live their lives around routines. For them, it works as much as keeping to time works for us. Experts recommend that you create a routine around bedtime with your baby.

Routines could start from ‘bathing your baby at night’, ‘wearing a diaper’, ‘wearing pyjamas’ and a list of other things that you can add to those activities. Soon your baby will get used to the sequence of events that lead up to bedtime, and after that, get your baby to sleep in an established pattern.

Their body system becomes wired towards that when you wear them into their pyjamas after changing their diapers; they can prepare for what comes next.

Set up a sleep environment

The environment your baby sleeps in matters, as parents and doctors alike have confirmed. To help your baby sleep, you have to create an environment that will stimulate your infant to relax throughout the night. You can implement the following:

  • Switch off the light. If your child doesn’t like the dark, leave the hallway lights on.
  • Turn down noises
  • Install a blackout shade if you can
  • Keep toys and other playthings away from the bed. Allow your baby to sleep with his/her favourite toy. (It should be child friendly and a soft toy)

Know when your baby needs more or less sleep

Another thing you need to consider. As babies grow, their sleep pattern changes.  New-borns(1-4 weeks old) sleep for about 16-17 hours in a day. However, when they are four months old, they sleep for around 14-15 hours.

What this tells you is that, when your baby refuses to sleep as early as he does before, it is because he does not need it. Then you can also move your baby’s bedtime up when you notice signs like fussiness and whining. This behaviour means that your baby needs more sleep.

Avoiding feeding them meals before bedtime

Taking meals before bedtime can also interfere with your baby’s sleep pattern. Therefore, if you have to feed your baby formula or any solid food, do it well before bedtime. The food would have the time to settle before they get to bed.

Check labels of foods for this. Especially, hold yourself from absently feeding them what you are either eating or drinking as you drink might contain caffeine.

Everyone should go together

Another strategy you can try out is going to bed with your baby. Although the Ferber Method might disagree with this, another expert recommends it due to its effectiveness.

When you put your baby to sleep, you can lie with her for a couple of minutes to give her a sense of security and comfort. Babies need both assurance and you being close to them help them fall asleep quickly.

You need to equip yourself with specific techniques to handle babies properly. Sleep helps them develop and also allows you to get some sleep as well. You can even get chores done when your baby is asleep.

With the strategies listed here, you can effectively put your baby to sleep. Do you have a plan that might work also? Leave your suggestions in the comments section below. We want to hear from you.
