7 Fabrics That Are Best Suited For Baby & Toddler Wear

By February 15, 2021 No Comments

It often happens that parents primarily prefer the style, when buying or making clothes for a child. However, the fabric is also important. Most experts agree that children’s wardrobe should have the following characteristics: good ventilation, the ability to absorb moisture, and not cause allergies. To simplify this task for parents, we have prepared an overview of the most suitable fabrics for children’s clothing. For a new-born, extra consideration should be taken into account such as the fabric should be comfortable against the cut umbilical cord. For older babies and kids, comfort and safety rank as the prime consideration. You also do not want the fabric to be clingy or slippery or thick – the fabric has to be breathable. The fabric also has to withstand many rounds of washing and also wear and tear from play and tumble, unless it is considered as special occasion wear.

Cotton

Cotton is traditionally considered one of the most environmentally friendly fabrics. Children’s jeans, t-shirts, dresses, and baby rompers from this fabric are perfect for any time of the year: they do not cause allergies, are durable enough and are highly chemical resistant. Babies and toddlers often have allergies or specific skin conditions which can be aggravated by rough or synthetic fabrics. Using organic cotton is a safe way to ensure that children will be comfortable, even if they have skin issues which are triggered by heavy dyes and chemicals. Cotton allows air to pass through it, and it can absorb and retain moisture. Nevertheless, it also has drawbacks, it can be difficult ironing clothes that are cotton-based. Clothes made out of cotton also tends to change shape in the washer. That is why a small amount of elastin or polyester is allowed in cotton items.

Satin

The satin fabric has a glossy surface and looks like silk. It is well-ventilated and easy to iron. Satin is suitable for children’s clothing. Due to the low thermal conductivity, satin will maintain the body temperature of the child. Things from satin almost do not wrinkle and are very durable, this is one of the most suitable options for warm summer weathers.

Jersey Knit

Jersey knit fabric is another strong choice for children’s and baby items, given its wearability. Jersey knit is breathable and easy to work with, making it an excellent choice even for sewing novices. Another advantage over woven clothes is that jersey knits are stretchy. Knit is very accommodative of constant body movements and growth spurts; you know how little ones grow in a blink of an eye. Remember that the edges of jersey knit fabric can curl after washing; therefore, you can choose to leave the ends unhemmed, giving the fabric a fun curled edge that looks great on sleeves and bottom hems for tops. Jersey knit is also incredibly soft, making it a fantastic fabric for simple, fun apparel.

Bamboo Rayon

Bamboo rayon fabric is the perfect fabric for swaddles, blankets, hats, and garments. It is an ultra-soft yet durable rayon fibre derived from bamboo plants. It is organically made and is supposed to have non-allergenic properties, which make the eco-conscious parents choose this fabric over others. It’s great for sensitive skin and is thermal-regulating, meaning that it will adjust with a child’s temperature, therefore ensuring your little one does not overheat. This attribute makes bamboo a wonderful choice for layering.

Muslin

This is a cotton fabric available in many different weights, from very thin to somewhat dense, even coarse. The thin muslin is great for making baby clothes as you do not get more breathable fabric than this, it being 100% cotton. Muslin is usually used for making cloth diaper covers, swaddle clothes, burp cloths and other accessories rather than clothes as it is not very glamorous looking.

Gauze

Gauze fabric is the perfect baby fabric. Whether you pick single or double gauze, this cotton fabric is light, breathable, and airy. You might find it referred to as muslin in ready-made products for receiving blankets. Single gauze is just one layer of gauze, but Double Gauze is the real star of the show, featuring two layers of gauze that are tacked together at regular intervals. Japanese double gauze is highly prized for its ultra-soft hand and opacity. Quality can vary due to dyeing, printing, and maker, so be sure to read carefully when purchasing.

Fleece

It is a synthetic artificial fabric that is often used in the production of children’s clothing. Fleece has many advantages: it is durable, easy to wash, dries quickly, and does not deform. Besides, fleece does not cause allergies. Due to this set of advantages, fleece fabric has gained great popularity among sportswear and outerwear, especially for children.
