4 Simple & Scrumptious Recipes For Family Mealtime

Having at least one family sit down mealtime is important and should be scheduled in as a daily requirement. Having the entire family sit around the table, and share a homecooked meal is a great bonding exercise; apart from enjoying a delicious meal together, it’s also a terrific way to rejoice in one another’s company. Family mealtime also enables everyone in the family to get talking about their day or even problems they may be struggling with, being the safe space of your household. Instead of ordering takeout, spice up your homecooked meals with these scrumptious recipes that we’ve cooked up!

But first, here are some tips on how to get the entire family in on family mealtimes.

  • Make family sit down meals a priority – Highlight the importance of it being family bonding time instead of making fancy or elaborate meals
  • Get your little ones involved – Let your kids set the table and help out with preparing the meal 
  • No TV time – Make sure the TV is out of bounds during mealtime
  • Start with small numbers – It can be challenging to have family sit down meals every day, so start with once a week and raise that number with time
  • Make family mealtime fun – Play some music as everyone dines and end the meal with dessert 

Chicken Tacos

Its time to fiesta with a Mexican delicacy, Tacos! What makes Tacos such a fun dish for mealtime is the DIY assembling. 

What you’ll need:

  • 3 Chicken breasts (Diced or Sliced) 
  • Olive oil
  • Salt 
  • Pepper 
  • Paprika 
  • Garlic powder 
  • Cayenne
  • 10 Tortillas 


  • 3 Tomatoes 
  • 3 Onions 
  • 2 Avocados 
  • Lime Wedges 
  • Bacon 
  • Shredded Mozarella 
  • Jalapenos 


  • Get the tacos warmed up in the oven and place them aside to cool 
  • Drizzle some oil onto a frying pan and throw in the chicken strips into the pan
  • Add a teaspoon of garlic powder, cayenne and paprika 
  • Add salt and pepper according to taste 
  • Stir fry the ingredients until the chicken turns golden brown 
  • Serve with tortillas on a plate along with lime wedges 
  • Cut up the toppings and display on the dinner table 
  • Assemble and customize your taco to your liking 
  • Fiesta!

Lemon chicken 

Lemon’s chicken is the way to go if you like your chicken zesty and with a punch of tang. 

What you’ll need:

  • 4 Chicken breasts 
  • 3 Eggs
  • 1/2 Cup of all-purpose flour 
  • 1/2 Cup of cornstarch 
  • 1/2 Cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice 
  • 1/3 Cup of brown sugar 
  • 1/2 Cup of water 
  • Salt 
  • Pepper
  • Sliced green onions 
  • Grated lemon zest 


  • Whisk the eggs in a bowl 
  • Combine the cornstarch and all-purpose flour in a bowl 
  • Dip the chicken strips into the egg and then into the flour mixture
  • Deep fry them for 5 minutes or until golden brown  
  • Drain the oil from the fried chicken on paper towels
  • Add the lemon juice, sugar and water in a saucepan and bring that to a slow simmer 
  • Pour in a tablespoon of cornstarch that has been mixed with some cold water 
  • Bring the sauce to a slow boil
  • Turn off the heat completely and throw in the fried chicken 
  • Toss the chicken until it’s fully coated in the lemon sauce 
  • Plate the dish 
  • Sprinkle the green onions and the lemon zest – do not add too much lemon zest as it can add too much of a bitter flavour 
  • Serve with rice 
  • Each spoonful will be a burst of tanginess!

Cowboy Chilli or Chilli Con Carne

Take a ride to the wild wild west and dine like a cowboy with this simple but delicious dish.

What you’ll need:

  • 500 g of sirloin beef (Cut into cubes)
  • 1 Onion 
  • 3 Cloves of garlic (Finely chopped)
  • A teaspoon of chilli powder
  • 1 Can of kidney beans 
  • 5 Tomatoes (Diced) 
  • 2 Jalapenos (Diced)
  • 1 Can of tomato paste or puree
  • A teaspoon of brown sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon of Paprika
  • 1 Cup of water 
  • Salt 
  • Pepper


  • Bacon bits 
  • Sliced green onions 
  • Sour cream
  • Grated cheddar cheese 
  • Bell peppers 


  • Drizzle some oil onto a frying pan and add the beef along with the onions and garlic 
  • Give them a good few minutes on the heat 
  • Add some pepper and salt according to your desire 
  • Add the paprika and chilli powder into the mix 
  • Cook until the beef becomes tender and the onions turn translucent 
  • Add the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, beans, water, sugar and jalapenos in.
  • Stir the ingredients well 
  • Bring to a simmer and let all the ingredients come as one 
  • Stir occasionally 
  • Serve in bowls 
  • Dollop a good amount of sour cream over the chilli con Carne
  • Place the toppings in separate bowls 
  • Add toppings according to your liking 
  • Eat with bread or baked tortilla chips 
  • Enjoy a hearty bowl of comfort food at its best 

Prawn Masala 

With a kick of spice and wholesome flavours, this recipe will have everyone wanting more.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 Large onion 
  • 3 Cloves of garlic 
  • 1 Ginger 
  • 1 Large tomato
  • 2 Tablespoons of grated coconut flakes 
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of chilli powder 
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of coriander powder 
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of garam masala mix
  • 1/4 Teaspoon of cumin seeds
  •  1 Green chilli (Chopped)
  • A handful of curry leaves 
  • 250 g of prawns (Deveined) 
  • 1 Cup of water 
  • 1/2 Cup of coconut milk 
  • Salt 


  • Drizzle a good amount of oil onto a frying pan 
  • Throw in the onions and let them turn translucent 
  • While the onions cook, blend the ginger and garlic until a paste or mash is formed 
  • Add a teaspoon of the paste into the frying pan 
  • Throw in the tomatoes and turmeric powder 
  • Add salt to your desired taste and stir well
  • Let the tomatoes break down into a mushy consistency 
  • Then put in the garam masala mix, coriander powder, chilli powder and grated coconut 
  • Stir the ingredients well 
  • You’ll notice the ingredients mesh together 
  • Add the said mix into a blender with the water and spritz away 
  • Keep the blended mix aside 
  • Get your pan out again, drizzle some oil and throw in some curry leaves over the heated oil  
  • Add the cumin seeds, green chilli and some chopped garlic 
  • Fry them until the leaves become crispy in texture
  • Add in the blended mix that was kept aside into the frying pan along with the coconut milk 
  • Stir and bring to a simmer 
  • Add in the prawns 
  • Cook until the prawns swirl up into a ‘C’ shape 
  • Serve with rice 
  • Enjoy a finger-licking meal with the family!
